Waning Star Typeface

Blackletter was once a dominant letterform, derived from manuscript handwriting and while it is not as widely used today, it is still present because of it's decorative flair.

Waning Star is an attempt at combining blackletter and transitional roman letterforms, with the goal of creating a more versatile and legible typeface for contemporary use.

The uppercase is made in a manner of manuscript lettering, mostly derived from the lowercase Fraktur style. The dents between stems and lobes are amplified and unconventional, producing the uniform feel across those characters. Others are made in a manner of gothico-antiqua, using the circular stroke movement rather than a more conventional straight lines of roman typeface.

Blackletter stylistic set of uppercase characters has elements of both Fraktur and Schwabacher with an ornamental twist. With it being slightly wider and longer than the regular set, combinations between those two in all caps look elegant and fluid.

Thickness of strokes is visually adjusted with an intent of having a functional typeface that works in smaller size, but when enlarged, a carefully balanced level of detail is revealed. The typeface has some of the less conventional, yet harmonious ligatures, giving user the ability of creating a text that has handcrafted quality. Besides the set of mathematical and punctation symbols, typeface is extended with ornaments ideal for use in line and paragraph breaks.

Waning Star with it's ambiguous nature of being both subtle and bold, contemporary and archaic, historic and fantastic, is an asset that can find it's use in logotypes as well as in large bodies of text.
